How has technology changed the way we learn?

In the olden days children use to sit in rows and look up at the blackboard. They used slates to do their work but when they had finished they would rub it out. Today technology has changed where there are laptops were you can use your google drive to be able to look back at your work.

As technology got better the children started sitting in groups of four. There were listening posts so they could hear stories and tv’s would get wheeled in for the class to watch documentaries on.

Then came out the plasma tv’s, smart phones, smart boards and laptops that became popular. Kids used simple class computers until the chrome books came out and they had different kinds of technology in front of them.

Did you know technology connects us to the world? We are able to create DLOs using google drive and still be able to look back at the work that has been done.

We are also able to look at other people’s blog posts. You can share your work that you have posted on your blog. So then people can comment on your work or do something similar to what you have done.

panmure bridge

Image result for the second bridge in panmure
Did you know that the first bridge built in Panmure was a swing bridge because people needed the bridge to spin from Pakuranga to Panmure bridge so that boats can go in and out.

When Panmure Bridge was built in 1865. Until that one became unsafe then they built another bridge that was the second bridge built in 1916.

Then the second bridge was made of iron from Sydney and kauri trees. They drove a big steam roller over the bridge to show that it was strong. The second bridge was used for 43 years until it started to crack.

The third bridge was opened in 1959 that is the bridge we still have to this day. That bridge is built of concrete and boats can go under  to the other side of the bridge.

Bridges helped people transport their goods to other places before the 3 bridges were built they had to cross the river it was difficult and was dangerous to cross.

Today we were writing a story about the first three bridges in Panmure was used for over ten years when the first bridge was built the second bridge was used for 43 the third bridge was opened in 1959. this is the bridge we currently use.

How to make a Hangi

This week we have been writing explanations. I found it interesting that only the men do the cooking. Here is my explanation that tells how a hangi is made.

How to make a hangi

A hangi is a traditional Maori way to cook food. Different cultures have different kinds of cooking their food. An interesting fact is that only the men are aloud to put the hangi into the ground.

When a hangi is being prepared the first step is to dig a pit in the ground. While they are digging the pit people are preparing the food to go in the ground. Timber and irons are burned and the irons are placed in the middle so they can heat up and cook the kai.

While the fire is burning a karakia is said to protect the environment and the native trees,  make sure the food tastes nice and to bless the food.

They break down the fire by digging out the ashes to remove some embers. This stops the food being too smoky and acrid. The food gets wrapped in cabbage leaves. This keeps food from drying out and keep the dirt out.Wrapped food is put into the baskets and put into the pit.  Meat goes in first because it takes longest to cook, then the baskets with the vegetables are placed on top.

Cabbage leaves and sacks are soaked in water and are put on the hot irons. The baskets are covered with wet sacks to keep dirt from falling onto the food, then finally covered with a canvas. The food is cooked  for 3 or 4 hours before they they remove the sacks. Men work quickly to remove the food from the pit.
